Bayer MaterialScience: Map Ta Phut Production Site

Bayer Thai Co.,Ltd. operates a world scale modern plastic manufacturing site in Map Ta Phut, Thailand. Supported by the global expertise of the mother company, Bayer MaterialScience's high quality Polycarbonate, Polycarbonates blends and films are produced to supply a rapid growing demand in the region. Map Ta Phut Site is located on 113 Rai of land in the Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate which is managed by the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT). The major processes are Polycarbonate (Makrolon®) Production, Polycarbonate Compound (Makroblend®) and PC/ABS (Bayblend®) Compounding and Bisphenol-A (BPA)

Products
Beside Makrolon® , we also produce Bayblend®, a very successful engineering plastic based on high tech-blend of Polycarbonate and ABS, at the same site.

1. Polycarbonate
Bayer Materialscience produces Polycarbonate under the trade name Makrolon®. Makrolon® is an amorphous, thermoplastic molding compound. High light transmission, high heat resistance, high
toughness, high creep modulus, high dimensional stability and good electrical insulation properties made from Makrolon® an extreme valuable engineering plastic. Probably the best-known products made of Makrolon® are CDs and DVDs. It would be almost impossible to imagine life without these silver discs – or without Makrolon® for that matter. Other applications are e.g. in automotive electrical, electronics, medical industries. New applications are constantly being discovered as a result of the material’s versatility in processing.
For example, Makrolon® is being incorporated in car roof structures instead of glass because it is lighter, more break-resistant and offers far greater design scope.
2. Polycarbonate Compounds
By reextruding Makrolon®,a wide variety of colors and additives, can be added. Glass fiber reinforced Makrolon® has a particularly high rigidity, coupled with very good dimensional stability.

Polycarbonate+Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (PC/ABS) (Bayblend®) Bayblend® is the trade name used by Bayer Materialscience for its product line of amorphous, thermoplastic polymer blends based on Polycarbonate and ABS. The blend technology supplies products with an attractive combination of mechanical, thermal and rheological properties. Particular mentioned should be Bayblend’s high heat resistance (between that of ABS and PC), its high impact strength, and its high stiffness and dimensional stability.

3. Bisphenol-A
Bisphenol-A is a raw material for the production of Polycarbonate and epoxy resins. The major part of the product produced at the site is used for polycarbonate.

4. Functional Films
The Bayer MaterialScience Business Unit for Coatings, Adhesives, Specialties operates a Film production plant to support the growth of its Functional Films business in the Asia Pacific region. The site is to cater the region's growing demand for tailor-made functional film solutions in many sectors such as hand held electronics devices, display, automotive, and ID card applications.
